PROCEDURES GOVERNING UNC PEMBROKE ATHLETICS RETIRED JERSEYS (APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY BY HALL OF FAME SELECTION COMMITTEE 6/2019)
The purpose of the UNC Pembroke Athletics Retired Jersey procedure is to recognize those student-athletes and coaches who have had extraordinary athletic accomplishments during their playing or coaching careers. This document sets forth the procedures for nominations and selection, as well as the criteria to be considered in determining whether a jersey number should be retired.
ELECTION COMMITTEE & PROCESS
1. The UNC Pembroke Athletics Hall of Fame Committee will serve as the voting body for retirement of a jersey number.

2. Number retirement is defined as ending the use of the nominated student-athlete’s jersey number permanently.

3. Procedures outlined below will apply to the current varsity sports of football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball (i.e. – sports for which jersey numbers are used).

4. Nominations shall be accepted from internal recommendation of candidates by members of the Hall of Fame Committee and from the general public through a standard nomination form. The nomination acceptance period will span the entire calendar year, but April 30 is the cutoff date for candidates to be considered for inclusion as part of the next Hall of Fame induction class.

5. Student-athletes are immediately eligible to have their number retired at the conclusion of their athletic eligibility.

6. Those attaining retired number status will be recognized during a home contest of the associated sport, or an athletic event deemed appropriate, as scheduled by UNC Pembroke Athletics. Jerseys will be displayed publicly, as appropriate, with some sign of identification. Jersey numbers that were retired prior to the establishment of election process and policies will be grandfathered in and retain retired status.

7. A nomination that is brought before the Hall of Fame Committee prior to the April 30 deadline will be discussed by the committee at its next scheduled meeting (usually in June). Nominees not selected must be re-nominated for further consideration.

8. Every member of the Hall of Fame Committee will vote on nominees brought to the committee. A nominee must have unanimous support of the committee in order for his/her number to be retired.
NOMINEES MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA TO ALLOW A NOMINATION TO BE SUBMITTED TO THE COMMITTEE:
1) Nominee must have received a bachelor’s degree from UNC Pembroke.

2) Nominee must have represented and continue to represent UNC Pembroke in the highest possible manner in all endeavors within sports as well as his/her personal life.

3) Nominee must have accomplished ONE of the following
  • Earned a national award recognized by the NCAA or NAIA (e.g. – National Player of the Year)
  • Earned a 1st Team All-America designation by an organization recognized by the NCAA
  • He/she was named Outstanding Player of a national championship event (e.g. – NCAA Championship MVP)
SPECIAL CONSIDERATION
Any individual, living or deceased, who has made unique and extraordinary contributions to the UNC Pembroke athletics program, shall be eligible to have his or her jersey retired. Special Inductees may include coaches and athletic staff members, distinguished alumni, friends of UNC Pembroke Athletics, and other individuals who are not necessarily eligible as a Student-Athlete Inductee. Eligibility as a Student-Athlete Inductee shall not disqualify an individual for consideration as a Special Inductee. A maximum of one (1) nominee from this category may be elected in any year. There is no expectation to choose a Special Inductee every year.
REVOCATION
UNC Pembroke retains the right to revoke this honor should a subject be convicted of a felony crime or fail to adhere to commonly accepted standards of decency that bring disrepute to the University.
PUBLIC RECOGNITION OF JERSEYS
Those attaining retired number status will be recognized during a home contest of the associated sport, or an athletic event deemed appropriate, as scheduled by UNC Pembroke Athletics. Jerseys will be displayed publicly, as appropriate, with some sign of identification. Jersey numbers that were retired prior to June 2019 will retain their status.
