Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. – UNCP rallied back from
a 14-7 deficit in the third quarter with 21-unanswered points in
the fourth period as the Braves staved off upset-minded Glenville
State with a 28-14 victory over the Pioneers on Saturday afternoon
at Morris Stadium.
Cory Smith threw for 164 yards and a trio of
touchdowns, two of which came in the fourth quarter, to lead the
Braves (4-1) to their second consecutive win. St. Anthony Lloyd hauled in four passes for 54 yards and a touchdown
to highlight the day for the receiving corps which also got
touchdown receptions from Josh Throckmorton and
Wes Carter. Travis Daniels
carried the ball seven times for 38 yards to pace the UNCP ground
game which was held to its lowest rushing total (103) since a
62-yard effort at Wingate on Sept. 13, 2008.
Quarterback Darold Hughes threw for 216 yards and a third quarter
touchdown for Glenville State (3-2), but was sacked four times,
including twice in the final period. Wes Hanson caught seven passes
for 63 yards and a touchdown, while DeAndre Johnson rushed 22 times
for a game-high 52 yards for the Pioneers as well.
Fred Williams and Adam Deese each
registered a game-best 13 tackles for UNCP, while also combining
for a trio of tackles for loss. James Alexander
notched a pair of sacks, with Jamaral Rease and
Zack Bohannon each grabbing a quarterback stuff as
well.
"I was disappointed that we came out of the gates as slow as
we did," said UNCP head coach Pete Shinnick of the offensive
performance in the first half. "We were very fortunate to win
the game today. We did not play very well offensively in the first
half, but we found a way to get it done. We have to correct our
inability to start fast, but I was pleased with the way we
finished."
Glenville State outgained the Braves by a 121-1 disparity in the
second quarter alone, but were forced to settle for just a pair of
field goals despite putting together a 59-yard scoring drive, and
then obtaining good field position on the ensuing possession via a
muffed punt by Elliott Powell. The Braves defense would stiffen up
on both scoring opportunities however, holding the Pioneers to no
yards once the hosts had advanced inside the red zone. Colston
Bayless connected on 22- and 31-yard field goal attempts to give
Glenville State a 6-0 edge heading into intermission.
After trading a pair of empty possessions to begin the third
quarter, UNCP keyed an 11-play, 87-yard scoring drive with its
ground game before Smith found Lloyd all alone on a 16-yard
pass-and-catch to give the visitors a tight 7-6 lead. The lead
would be short lived, however, as Hughes engineered a 13-play,
78-yard scoring drive that was capped on a 9-yard scoring toss to
Wes Hanson. A two-point conversion moments later would give the
Pioneers their last lead of the contest.
The Braves outgained the hosts by a 105-28 margin in the fourth
quarter, but special teams mistakes doomed the Pioneers the most.
After UNCP had tied the score on a 79-yard march to start the
fourth quarter, the Braves twice took advantage of punt team
miscues by Glenville State to score the last two touchdowns of the
game. Norman Seigniou mishandled a Bill Stanley punt midway through
the period to set the Black and Gold up near midfield, and the back
breaker came following UNCP's go-ahead score when long
snapper Vinny Dimarco had his delivery go over the head of punter
Tanner Collins and roll all the way back to the 1-yard line.
Collins would collect the ball, but his punt attempt was blocked
and returned for a touchdown by Rakim Williams.
UNCP will be back in action again on Saturday when the Braves make
the long trek to Winter Park, Fla., to battle Webber International
(3-2) at Legion Field. Kick off has been set for 1 p.m. The
Warriors were a 13-10 winner over visiting Azusa Pacific earlier
Saturday.
