Box Score PEMBROKE – An extremely physical game finished at a standstill on Wednesday evening as UNCP and USC Aiken combined for 40 fouls in the 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of action in a Peach Belt Conference matchup at Varsity Grounds in Pembroke.
The Braves (7-2-1, 1-2-1 PBC) began with an offensive charge on the USC Aiken (2-6-2, 0-2-1) goal with six shots in less than 14 minutes, but allowed the Pacers to register the first goal of the game. Steven Campbell received the assist by Chinedu Arinze for his first goal of the season as he placed the ball in the upper left corner of the net at the 19:37 mark.
UNCP's Sam Miles tied the game up in the 29th minute for his eighth goal of the season as Adam Smith collected the assist on the pass to Miles who shot the ball which hit off the post and ricocheted in.
Miles led the Braves with four of UNCP's nine shots entering into halftime, while the Pacers only tallied five shots in the first half.
The second half proved to be more aggressive as UNCP added 15 shots compared to USC Aiken's eight, however the fouls were the feature of the half as the Pacers posted 13 fouls and two yellow cards in the half alone. UNCP finished the game with 16 fouls and 31 shots while USC Aiken had 24 fouls and 17 shots on the night.
Sean Hoek and Miles shared a team high seven shots for the Black and Gold while Arinze held a team best five shots. Goalkeeper Ryan Hanson recorded four saves while Pacer's net minder Robert Bolender posted 13 saves.
"We are happy to get a tie in the game because in the end we could have ended up losing it," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "We probably deserved to win but they fought very hard and it was a very physical game but sometimes that is just the way it goes."
UNCP will be back in action on Friday when the Black and Gold suit up to host Coker (9-1-0) in a 7 p.m. contest at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2011 UNCP soccer home games is free.
