WINGATE – The duo of Caroline Newman and Jamie Burwell limited the Wingate offense to just three hits while round trippers by seniors Lynn Grantham and Morgan Patrick led the Lady Braves' softball squad to a 4-0 victory in game two of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Wingate.

The Lady Braves (10-8, 0-2 PBC) in contrast recorded eight hits while displaying errorless defense to rally for a doubleheader split.

UNCP captured a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after senior Courtney Hill singled through the left side of the infield and was moved to second on a walk by sophomore Holly Berry. Senior Loren Bartz then singled to left center to bring Hill around to score.

The Lady Braves added one more in the top of the fourth inning on senior Lynn Grantham's third homer of the year.

UNCP would score its last two runs in the top of the fifth inning when senior Morgan Patrick homered to dead center to bring freshman Schanique Barrett around from second base.

Burwell earned the victory after tossing four scoreless innings of relief while Newman allowed just one hit in her three innings of work.

Grantham and Patrick finished 1-for-3 and 1-for-4, respectively, with a combined three RBI to lead the Lady Braves' offense. Hill added a 2-for-4 effort with a run scored and Bartz finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Lady Braves will return to the friendly confines of LRA Field for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with USC Aiken on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
