Box Score PEMBROKE – UNCP surrendered a first-inning run in spotting visiting Coker an early 1-0 lead, but the third-ranked Braves yielded very little the rest of the way out in completing a short four-game home stand with a 6-1 win over the Cobras on Wednesday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
The triumph marked finished off a season sweep of the Cobras for UNCP (15-1) who completed the first leg of the sweep on the shoulders of a 13-2 win over Coker (6-10) earlier this season in Hartsville, S.C. The victory also marked the third-straight win for the Braves since collecting their only loss of the season on Saturday against Peach Belt Conference rival and then-No. 7 ranked North Georgia.
UNCP's Joe Mangum drove in a run and doubled twice to push his hitting streak out to 12 games, while teammate Jason Coker continued his career onslaught of the Cobras by singling, doubling and driving in a pair of runs to highlight a 2-for-3 hitting line. The Charlotte native now boasts a career average of .414 (12-for-29) in eight career games against the Cobras to go along with 11 RBI and six runs scored.
Coker got a team-best 2-for-4 outing from Matt Ammons, with Jake Frazier (1-for-3) scoring the lone run of the ballgame for the visitors.
Freshman Thomas Allen (2-0) picked up the win in a pre-determined rotation for the Braves after yielding just two base runners (hit, walk) and striking out one in two innings from the hill. Bryan Collins struck out a pair in a hitless two innings of work, closer Brian Willis struck out three and yielded a pair of hits in a two-inning appearance as well. Starter Brantley Hattrich struck out three but allowed two hits and one earned run in the first and second innings, while Braxton Lewis struck out each of the three batters he faced in the ninth.
Starter Dan Meyer (0-2) saddled the loss for the Cobras by allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks in four innings from the mound.
Coker used consecutive two-out hits by Frazier and Nick Fuoco to plate a run in the top of the first, but UNCP answered in the bottom of the frame, getting Mangum aboard via a two-out double before consecutive passed balls brought the tying run across the plate. The Braves got RBI knocks from Coker and Eitan Maoz in the third to grab the lead, and then extended the advantage out to three runs, 4-1, on Tyler Potter's sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Consecutive RBI hits from Coker and Mangum in the fifth would provide the hosts with a pair of insurance runs.
UNCP will be back in action again this weekend when the Braves pack up their show and head to Greenwood, S.C., for a PBC series against Lander (9-7, 0-0 PBC) at Legion Field. The squads will open up their series with a 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon doubleheader, before closing out the set with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
