Box Score 2 FLORENCE, S.C. – Fifth-seeded Augusta State used an error by the UNCP defense in the bottom of the fifth inning to score the game's only run in handing the Lady Braves a 1-0 defeat in the first round Peach Belt Conference Tournament consolation bracket on Friday afternoon at the Freedom Florence Recreational Complex in Florence, S.C.
The Lady Braves (21-24) saw their season come to a close despite a strong performance by sophomore starter Starr Gilley, who took a no-hit bid into the bottom of the fifth inning before surrendering her only run (unearned) on the afternoon. The Graham native allowed just two hits over six innings with two strikeouts in taking the loss in the circle.
The Lady Braves were limited to just four hits on the afternoon, and saw their best chance to score come in the fourth inning when sophomore Holly Berry led off with a double to center, and was moved over to third on a sac bunt by senior Morgan Patrick. Head Coach Lacinda Melanson then put on a squeeze play, but the attempt was popped up to the third baseman, who quickly tagged Berry for the double play which ended the threat.
Augusta State scored the only run of the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth inning on an error by the UNCP defense.
Freshman Taylor Cloninger led the offense with a 1-for-3 effort with a triple, and Berry added a 1-for-3 line of her own with a double.
The contest served as the final game for Lady Brave seniors Patrick, Bartz, Caroline Newman, Courtney Hill, Lynn Grantham, and Kristen Hobbs.
