Box Score 2 PEMBROKE – The visiting Augusta State Jaguars scored two runs in the top of the first inning that proved to be the difference in a 2-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over the UNCP softball team in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at LRA Field in Pembroke.
The Lady Braves (18-18, 6-8 PBC) got seven strong innings inside the circle from freshman Natalie Klemann, but the UNCP offense was only able to record six hits against the Jaguars' (25-11, 6-4 PBC) Emily Headrick over her seven innings of work.
After falling behind 2-0, UNCP first got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning when freshman Taylor Cloninger ripped an RBI-double to right field that scored junior Jamie Burwell from third.
The Lady Braves would again threaten in the bottom of the sixth inning, but a double steal attempt to score sophomore Holly Berry from third was thwarted, ending the two-out rally.
Berry led the team with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate and Cloninger added a 1-for-3 line with an RBI-double.
Seniors Morgan Patrick and Lynn Grantham and sophomore Kellie Van Dyke each added a hit for UNCP.
The Lady Braves will be back at it tomorrow when they host PBC foe and 23rd-ranked Armstrong Atlantic in a doubleheader at LRA Field beginning at 1 p.m.
