Box Score 2 PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team not only posted nine hits in the five innings of action, but took advantage of St. Andrews eight errors to clinch the 10-2 victory in five innings over St. Andrews on Thursday afternoon at LRA Field in game one of the twinbill.
UNCP (6-3) extended its winning streak to two-games with the win and captured its 10th straight victory in the series with St. Andrews (2-5).
Sophomore Caitlin Steel was perfect from the plate as she went 3-for-3 with three runs, an RBI and notched two singles and a triple in her at-bats, while senior Taylor Cloninger went 2-for-3 with on RBI as she also tallied two singles. Right fielder Whitney Jackson totaled two runs and one hit, as Kaytee Wilson also posted two RBI.
Kori Ballard and Hayley Volpert each hit home runs to log the only scores and hits of the game for St. Andrews in the second and third innings, respectively.
Senior Natalie Klemann (2-1) finished her four innings in the middle for UNCP with two earned runs and two strikeouts in her 14 batters faced, before Katy Austin came in the for final in to relieve.
Ballard (0-1) split the game with Corinne Eosso as each went two innings in the circle for the Knights. Ballard allowed five runs on three hits, while Eosso gave up the other five runs (two earned) on six hits.
The Lady Braves scored in each of their four innings at bat with three coming in the first as Jackson, Brea Hartley and Steel put the runs on the board. Another pair of runs were brought home in the second, while the fourth included a homer by first baseman Megan Hillard. One final run crossed home plate in the fourth to give UNCP the eight run advantage and end the game in five innings.
