PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team used cautious defense and held nine Pfeiffer runners on base to hold off the visiting Falcons en route to the 4-1 regional win on Wednesday evening at LRA Field.
UNCP (20-21) extended its winning streak to three-games and halted Pfeiffer's (15-18-1) five-game unbeaten streak.
Despite being out-hit throughout the game, the Lady Braves were led by Whitney Jackson with two hits and two runs scored, while Brea Hartley, Kaytee Wilson and Shelby Holland each claimed one hit apiece. Hartley gathered a pair of RBI with her single up the middle in the third inning. Pfeiffer claimed two hits from Hannah Jackson, Sadie Saine and Jaclyn Boever.
Junior Selena Ashley (10-10) pitched a complete game after throwing 115 pitches in seven full innings. She gave up one earned run on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks to gather a .500 record in the middle for UNCP. The Falcons' Sam Jarmusch (6-8) allowed four earned runs on five hits in her six innings in the circle.
Whitney Jackson opened up the contest with a triple to right field and was scored on Wilson's sacrifice fly to left field to give UNCP the 1-0 lead. The Falcons placed Hannah Jackson on second with a double to left field and scored on Rachel Crowder's single to tie up the contest at the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third, Jackson notched her second hit of the game to reach first on a bunt before Wilson's double along the left field line. Hartley's at-bat was a single up the middle to send both Whitney Jackson and Wilson home to secure a two-run lead. Holland added the final run as she was walked and scored on a pass ball in the fourth.
