Georgia College Turns Back Women's Soccer In Double Overtime

PEMBROKEKatie Watkins helped the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team rally back from a 1-0 deficit with a goal in the 80th minute, but visiting Georgia College used a 107th minute Golden Goal by Ally Barys to upset the Braves, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.

It was just the second loss in the last seven outings for the Braves (5-5-0, 4-2-0 PBC) who had their four-game home win streak snapped with the heartbreaker as well. Georgia College (6-4-2, 4-3-0) won for the third-straight time in Pembroke.

Barys and Maddie Stephen both netted scores to pace the visitors, who also got four saves from netminder Ashlee Graham. Armani Boswell logged a game-best six shots for the Braves, while Janae Aiken registered six saves to highlight the defensive effort for the hosts.

The Braves got most of the run of play for much of the second half, but Stephens broke the scoreless deadlock for the Bobcats when she collected a nifty pass from Rahliat Animashaun and rifled a shot past Aiken in the 58th minute. UNCP got a prime chance to score in the 80th minute when Watkins proved to be the beneficiary of a scrum in the penalty area and fired a close-range shot to the near post away from traffic.

The Braves will close out a season-long three-game home stand on Wednesday when they suit up to lock horns with 11th-ranked Wingate (9-0-0) in a 5 p.m. matchup at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2015 UNCP soccer home games is free.
