PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with visiting and ninth-ranked Wingate for more than 105 minutes, but Kimmi Moore's 106th minute shot caught the underside of the crossbar and bounced just inside the touch line to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory on Wednesday evening at Varsity Grounds.
The setback marked the second-straight double overtime loss for the Braves (5-6-0) who will now travel to face third-ranked North Georgia (9-0-1, 4-0-1 PBC) on Saturday afternoon in Dahlonega, Ga. The triumph helped the nationally-ranked Bulldogs (11-0-0) stretch their win streak out 11 games.
It was the fourth time in the last five series meetings that UNCP and Wingate have had to settle things in overtime.
Katie Watkins registered a team-best three shots for the Braves, while goalkeeper Janae Aiken tallied seven saves to pace the defensive effort. Alexis Jones turned in just one stop between the pipes en route to recording her fourth clean sheet of the season. The Bulldogs have not allowed a goal in more than two weeks (five games) – a stretch of more than 383 minutes.
The Bulldogs had their best look on goal just less than nine minutes into the first extra period, but a UNCP defender got in front of a quality strike by Moore and cleared it off the line. Wingate also had a 102nd minute goal nullified by an offsides call.
