DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Third-ranked North Georgia used a pair of first half goals and an undaunted defensive effort to key a 2-0 victory over the visiting UNC Pembroke women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at the UNG Soccer Complex.
The setback marked the third-straight loss for the Braves (5-7-0, 4-3-0 PBC), who also had their three-game series unbeaten streak snapped as well. The Nighthawks (10-1-1, 5-1-1), who suffered their first loss of the season at Clayton State on Wednesday, have claimed all three of their series victories (3-6-2 all-time against UNCP) in Dahlonega.
Katie Watkins and Stacey Scott each registered a pair of shots to pace the offensive efforts for the Black & Gold, while Janae Aiken picked up six saves in goal for the visitors. Jacy Ramey and Sophia Matonak both netted goals for the hosts, and Mallory Sayre tallied a lone save en route to recording her eighth shutout of the campaign.
Ramey scored her 10th goal of the season in the 13th minute to get North Georgia off the mark, but the Nighthawks padded that lead out to 2-0 just more than 14 minutes later when Matonak found the back of the net after a scuffle in the penalty area.
The Braves will return home again on Wednesday when they lace up to take on region rival Mount Olive (7-3-2) in a 4 p.m. contest at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2015 UNCP soccer home games is free.
