PEMBROKE – Young Harris's Piers Oldland drilled a shot from the left side of the box on an assist from 18 yards out at the 14:29 mark to notch the game-winning goal for the nationally-ranked Mountain Lions and deliver the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team a 3-0 loss in Peach Belt Conference play and the final road contest of the season on Saturday at YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Braves (5-6-2, 1-4-2 PBC) spent the first 14 minutes of action in a deadlock for control with Young Harris (11-3-0, 6-1-0) as each offense was left wanting by the opposing team's defense. Both Kenneth Perkinson and Jordan Bradshaw collected one save in the first half as the Mountain Lions led five shots to two.
The scoring session began with Oldland on the assist by Mikie Rowe in the first half, but continued when Jake Simpson scored at the top of the box for his fifth goal of the season at the 75:33 mark. Simpson gathered assists from Tom Joslin and Alex Wyper. Finally, Young Harris tipped in the final goal of the game when Lewis Hilton scored from the left side on the assist by Wyper just 40 seconds later.
In the second half, UNCP tallied only four shots compared to Young Harris's 10. Six different Braves registered shots as Tom Devitt and Nathan Legge were the lone players for UNCP with a shot on goal.
Hilton posted five shots, while four other players had at least two shots. Both Perkinson and Bradshaw spent all 90 minutes in goal as they finished the game with three and two saves, respectively.
The two squads combined for 26 fouls including 15 on Young Harris, but the Black and Gold were awarded a pair of yellow cards in the contest.
UNCP will return to Pembroke for the rest of the season starting on Monday with a 3:30 p.m. PBC contest against Flagler (7-4-1, 6-2-0) at Varsity Grounds.
