Women's Soccer Rallies Twice To Down Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Elin Petersen's 31st minute header helped Young Harris take a 2-1 edge into the halftime break, but the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team scored three times in the second half to register a 4-2 win over the Mountain Lions on Saturday afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The win helped the Braves (7-7-0, 5-3-0 PBC) stay perfect in their 5-game-old series with Young Harris, while also helping the Black & Gold snap a two-game road losing streak as well. It was the fourth loss in the last two weeks for the Mountain Lions (4-9-0, 2-7-0) who were playing just their fifth home game of the season.

Amber Watkins netted a pair of goals for UNCP, while Stacey Scott logged a game- and career-best seven shots and turned in both a goal and an assist. Janae Aiken turned in eight saves between the pipes for the visitors en route to grabbing her seventh win of the season as well.

A failed clearance by the UNCP defense led to an own goal in the fifth minute that gave the hosts a quick 1-0 lead, but Scott evened things back up in the 24th minute when she used a throw-in from Mackenzie Wright to set up a long blast to the far post past YHC netminder Arielle Charles. Just more than seven minutes later, however, Petersen would give the Mountain Lions the lead again when she headed in a direct kick from Olivia Goddard.

Watkins scored both of her goals five minutes apart in the second half and gave UNCP the lead for good at the 52:23 mark off an assist from Scott. Christine Rolfes would add an insurance goal – the first of her collegiate career – with just more than 20 minutes to play.

UNCP will open up a two-game home stand on Monday when they suit up to take on Flagler (8-3-1, 5-3-0) in the front half of a 1 p.m. soccer doubleheader at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2015 UNCP home games is free.
