Women's Soccer Uses Late Goal To Forge Tie With Flagler

PEMBROKE – Flagler used a well-executed set piece to get on the board just 87 seconds into the contest, but Rae-Shawna Campbell punched in the Equalizer in the 88th minute to help the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team forge a 1-1 tie with the visiting Saints on Monday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.

UNCP (7-7-1, 5-3-1 PBC) extended its unbeaten streak out to three games with the result, while also guaranteeing the club a winning regular season home record for the second-straight year. The Saints (8-3-2, 5-3-1) are now 2-1-1 against the Braves in Pembroke.

It was the first goal of the season for Campbell who scored on her only shot of the outing, while newcomer Kate Weisner picked up the assist. Three different players logged a team-best three shots for the hosts. Janae Aiken registered six saves between the pipes for the Braves as well.

Kaela Harmon's running header off of a Brooke DeLauder corner kick at the 1:27 mark gave the Saints a quick 1-0 advantage and that scored would hold up until the halftime break despite a late push by the Black & Gold. A flurry of second half action that eventually produced 14 combined shots culminated when a shot by Weisner was deflected to the feet of Campbell who finished with a quality strike past Flagler goalkeeper Maddison Lipson.

Both teams got quality chances to come away with the win in the second extra period, but a 103rd-minute shot from Amber Watkins caught the crossbar, and Katie Reed mirrored the opportunity with 34 seconds left to play.

UNCP will close the lid on its 2015 home schedule on Wednesday when the Braves suit up to battle USC Aiken (4-10-1, 4-5-0) in the front half of a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Varsity Grounds. Kickoff will be preceded by Senior Night festivities that will honor Campbell and Aiken, as well as fellow senior Cassie Callahan.
