PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke soccer team got a goal from Stacey Scott just 23 seconds into the contest and never looked back as the Braves picked up a key Peach Belt Conference victory with a 3-0 win over visiting USC Aiken on Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.
The triumph helped the Braves (8-7-1, 6-3-1 PBC) extend their unbeaten streak out to three games, while also moving the Black & Gold into sole possession of fourth place in the league standings. The setback snapped a season-long two-game win streak for the Pacers (4-11-1, 4-6) who fell to 0-12-3 in the series with UNCP.
Scott tallied both a goal and an assist to aid the effort, but UNCP also got goals from Amber Watkins and freshman Christine Rolfes in the victory as well. Goalkeeper Janae Aiken matched a season-high with nine saves on the way to recording her third clean sheet of the season for the Black & Gold. Akeyla Furbert finished with a game-best seven shots for the Pacers.
Scott's header would give the hosts all the scoring they would need, but UNCP padded its lead out to 2-0 on a 40-yard blast by Rolfes in the 15th minute, and then capped the scoring in the 21st minute when Scott fed a pass to Watkins who finished with a chip shot past USC Aiken netminder Nicole Cranny.
The Braves will close out the regular season portion of their 2015 schedule on Saturday when they head to southwest Georgia to take on PBC regular season champion and eighth-ranked Columbus State (14-2-1, 9-0-1) in a 1 p.m. matchup at the Walden Soccer Complex.
