PEMBROKE - The UNC Pembroke volleyball team was held to a .093 hitting percentage as the Braves fell in three straight sets, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-16 to Montevallo in Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
The Braves (8-24, 3-15 PBC) were overwhelmed by the Falcons' (20-12, 11-7) offense that tallied 46 kills for a .235 hitting percentage. Montevallo earned seven service aces, compared to three from UNCP. The Falcons also held the advantage in assists and digs, but the Black and Gold dominated in blocks with a 10-1 advantage.
UNCP was led by Nicole Mathews who notched six kills, while Caroline Pridgen added five. Alicia Paeplow posted a team-high 12 assists, while Cayce Bell led the defense with 12 digs. Pridgen was behind five block assists and one solo block, while Jada Vernon has two solo blocks and Paelpow along with Mathews had a trio of block assists each.
Montevallo opened up an 8-2 run in the first set to control the lead as Rebekah Phelps and Kristy Bohan each used tactical serving to hold off the Braves. In the second set, the Falcons controlled the early lead, but the Black and Gold inched its way to within two points at the 23-21 mark. A service ace and two UNCP errors allowed the Falcons to take set two. Finally in the third set, Montevallo collected 16 kills compared to UNCP's six and used a 7-2 run to end the game.
Bohan led the way for the Falcons' offense with 16 kills and a .483 hitting percentage, while Phelps contributed nine kills. Carissa Bell had a team-high 13 digs, while Nicole Holton and Phelps had 10 digs each. Briana Marquez dished out 39 assists as Bohan had four service aces.
