AUGUSTA, Ga. – Senior Nicole Mathews tallied a team-high eight kills and junior Caroline Pridgen led the visiting UNC Pembroke volleyball team with a .500 hitting percentage, but the Augusta Jaguars were too much and overpowered the Braves in straight sets, 3-0, in Peach Belt Conference action on Friday evening at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Braves (7-21, 2-12 PBC) who registered 28 kills for a .118 hitting percentage, compared to 43 kills and a .257 hitting percentage from the Jaguars (15-13, 6-10). The scores of the three sets were 25-23, 25-23 and 25-20.
Sophomore libero Ka'asha Jefferies posted UNCP's only double-digit dig total with 11, while setter Alicia Paeplow dished out 13 assists in the contest. The Black and Gold out-blocked Augusta with eight team blocks as Mathews and Cecilia Brandon finished the game with four block assists each and Pridgen added a trio of block assists. Freshman Mckala Bozman tallied the squad's only solo block of the evening and sophomore Jada Vernon posted six of UNCP's eight service aces.
Both teams registered 11 kills in the opening set with Augusta logging a trio of kills in the final four points of the game to take a close set one. The Jaguars hit .378 in the second set with 19 kills compared to UNCP's nine, and narrowly pulled out the win in the second set as the Braves used strong defense at the net and precision serving to slow down the Jags.
Finally, in set three, the Braves controlled the lead early and held a 16-13 advantage on a kill by Vernon, but Augusta, again, out-hit UNCP with 13 kills and used a 5-1 run at the end to close out the set for the victory.
Savanna Gonzales carried a team-high 11 kills, while Kali Boatwright contributed 10 for Augusta. Setter Sadie Thurston finished the game with 35 assists, while Cat DeSilvester and JaNhea Beisner added double-digit digs.
The Braves will conclude the road portion of their 2015 schedule on Saturday as the team faces Georgia College (11-14, 5-11) in a 2 p.m. contest in Milledgeville, Ga.
