MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The visiting UNC Pembroke volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia College on Saturday afternoon in the Centennial Center as the Bobcats registered a .271 hitting percentage en route to the shutout victory with scores of 25-18, 26-19 and 25-23.
The Bobcats' (12-14, 6-11 PBC) defense held the Braves (7-22, 2-13) to a .086 hitting percentage, but were out-dug by the Black and Gold, 48-44. Senior Nicole Mathews led the Black and Gold with nine kills, while Cecilia Brandon tallied eight and both Caroline Pridgen and Brittani Jefferson added six.
Setter Bailee Jones totaled 23 assists, while libero Ka'asha Jefferies had a team-best 15 digs and Cayce Bell notched 10 digs. Sophomore Jada Vernon led the Braves in service aces for the second-straight game as she posted a trio of UNCP's five, while Brandon nabbed three block assists and Pridgen turned in two. The Braves finished with a solo block and eight block assists compared to the Bobcats' one solo block and 12 block assists.
The Braves tried to eat away at Georgia College's lead in the first set by posting 10 kills, but the Bobcats hit .207 and utilized 13 UNCP hitting errors to take set one. Georgia College, again, held the lead from the start of the second set and hit .367 for a two-set advantage in the match. Finally, in the third set, UNCP fought back from a 20-14 deficit to get to within one point, 23-22, but the Bobcats closed out the game thanks to 16 kills in the final set compared to UNCP's 14.
The Bobcats were led by Ebony Powers with 10 kills, while Kayla Brockway dished out 26 assists and Katie Ray had 11 digs.
The Black and Gold will return to Pembroke for the rest of the season starting on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. PBC contest against Francis Marion (14-12, 7-8) on Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court inside the English E. Jones Center.
