Men's Basketball Pummels Winston-Salem State

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team scored 24 points off of 21 Winston-Salem State turnovers and used a 27-4 first half run to snap a three-game losing skid with an 84-64 victory over the Rams on Monday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the first December victory for the Braves (6-4) who completed a season sweep of WSSU with the result as well. The setback snapped a four-game win streak for Winston-Salem State (5-3) who had not lost since an 89-88 home setback to the Braves on November 17.

Newcomer Giavonni Mack scored a game- and season-best 20 points and added four assists and a pair of steals to pace the Braves who got double-digit scoring numbers from three other players on the night as well. Brandon Winford tacked up his 17th career double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, while Alex Bradley and Jihad Wright chipped in 17 and 12 points, respectively.

Winston-Salem State, who shot 29.6 percent from the field in the opening stanza, was led by Demone Harrison who registered 15 points. C.J. Ford scored 11 points and added seven rebounds and five assists as well.

The Black & Gold shot nearly 73 percent (8-for-11) from the field in the first eight minutes of the second half and led by as much as 29 points, 59-30, after Mack's running layup with 12:49 left to play.

Winston-Salem State led by eight points, 13-5, after Harrison's layup just less than six minutes into the game, but Mack's 3-pointer 30 seconds later sparked the Braves on the game-changing 27-4 run that spanned nearly 11 minutes. The Rams shot just 12 percent (2-for-17) from the field over the 11-minute span and turned the ball over nine times as well.

UNCP will step back into Peach Belt Conference play on Thursday when it treks to Columbus, Ga., to take on PBC East rival Columbus State (6-1, 0-0 PBC) in the back end of a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader inside the Frank G. Lumpkin Center.
