FAYETTEVILLE – The UNC Pembroke football team limited Fayetteville State to just 75 yards of offense in the second half and overcame five costly turnovers to upend the Broncos, 14-10, in the seventh installment of the Two Rivers Classic on Saturday evening at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium.
UNCP (2-0) has now won three-straight games dating back to the 2014 regular season finale, and is perfect in seven meetings with the Fayetteville State (0-2) since the traveling trophy game began back in 2009. The Braves are a perfect 4-0 in Fayetteville over that span.
Rontonio Stanley ran for 88 yards on 18 carries to lead a potent rushing attack that finished the night with 183 yards. Cliff Jones ran for 25 yards and a game-sealing touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Junior wide receiver B.J. Bunn accounted for the other score – a 3-yard reception in the back of the end zone midway through the second period.
Code Black came up big for the second-straight week, registering 10 tackles for loss, including a quartet of sacks. None of the sacks were bigger than Tyler Hinton's 13-yard drop on a desperation drive for the hosts late in the final stanza. Mike Lawrence (two pass break-ups), Garrett Barnett and Chris Phipps all turned in a team-best seven tackles.
UNCP will be back in action again on September 19 when it returns home to battle Shaw (0-2) in a 7 p.m. contest at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. The Bears dropped a 30-16 contest at home to Wingate earlier on Saturday.
