PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke football team forced three turnovers and used a clutch goal line stand right before halftime to key a 16-6 win over Shaw on Saturday evening at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
It was the fourth-straight victory dating back to last season for the Braves (3-0) who are unblemished through three games for the third time (2009, 2013) in program history. The setback marked the fifth-straight loss for Shaw (0-3) who also fell to 1-2 in the series with the Black & Gold.
Junior B.J. Bunn hauled in six catches for 70 yards and a second quarter touchdown to pace the offense which also got a game-best 53 rushing yards (17 carries) from freshman Demontay Rhem. Patrick O'Brien threw for 190 yards on 18-of-32 passing for the hosts as well.
Code Black registered two or more sacks for the third-straight game this season and limited Shaw to just 87 yards on the ground. Tyler Hinton led the defense with seven tackles (4 solo), including one tackle for loss, while Elijah Williams and Josh Manns each tallied interceptions. Mike Keck and Marquin Hill both added a sack as well.
Shaw drove 41 yards on three plays to take a 6-3 lead early in the second quarter, but O'Brien engineered a 7-play, 62-yard scoring drive that was capped on his 18-yard strike right before the half to give the hosts the lead for good. The Bears used three-straight big plays to drive down to the UNCP 1-yard line with three seconds left before the break, but Keck stuffed Travis Lock at the line of scrimmage to give the Braves a jolt of momentum heading into the locker rooms.
Matt Davis connected on a 22-yard field goal midway through the third quarter, and then added a 17-yard field goal in the final period, to complete the scoring.
UNCP will be back in action again on September 26 when it treks to Tigerville, S.C., for a 7 p.m. contest at North Greenville (1-2).
