MORROW, Ga. – Freshman Jordan Walshaw collected a deflection off the throw-in in the early minutes of overtime to slam the ball into the back of the net and finish it off with the Golden Goal at 2:32 in the overtime period to push the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team past Montevallo, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference action at Laker Field.
The Braves (3-2-1, 1-0-1 PBC) completely evened up the series with Montevallo (2-4-0, 0-1-0 PBC) and snapped a three-game winless streak this season, while the Falcons fell in their first conference matchup of 2015.
After being down by one goal for more than 10 minutes, junior Branco Theis gathered a rebound in the front of the goal to even up the game in the 79th minute. Montevallo's Soheyl Rafi added the first score of the game at the 68:35 mark to give Montevallo the lead.
"We had a fantastic team effort today from everyone on our squad," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson.
The Falcons controlled a 32-13 shot advantage in the game, but the Braves held off the onslaught as sophomore Kenneth Perkinson picked up a season-high 10 saves in his 102:32 minutes of action between the pipes. Yannic Horn totaled just four saves for Montevallo in his complete game.
Both Theis and Walshaw totaled three shots, while defenders Izzy Evans and Tyler Santee each had a pair of shots for the Black and Gold. Shawn Healyand and Rafi gathered a game-high eight shots as Marcel Fahrenholz posted six to combine for more than half of the Falcons' shots on the night.
The Braves received three of the four yellow cards were awarded throughout the first 90 minutes despite only talling a combined 17 fouls in the contest.
The Braves will return home for a mid-week battle against regional foe Belmont Abbey (1-4) in a 7 p.m. kickoff at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2015 UNCP home soccer matches is free.
