SAVANNAH, Ga. – Embry-Riddle used a seventh-minute goal from Andrea Frøshaug and an eight-save performance from fellow all-American Olivia Lynch to key a 1-0 win over the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team on Friday afternoon at the Armstrong Pirate Shootout.
The setback marked the first season-opening loss for the Braves (0-1-0) since 2003. Embry-Riddle (1-0-0), which returned 19 players off of last season's club that advanced to the NAIA National Semifinals, features five all-Americans in its starting lineup.
Courtney Crump matched a career high with a team-best eight shots for UNCP, including a 42nd minute strike that careened off the woodwork. Senior Janae Aiken tallied a pair of saves to lead the Black & Gold defensive efforts.
"I am disappointed that we opened the season with loss, but I have to give credit to Embry-Riddle," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "They are a very talented team that is well coached. I think it is fair to say that they would be a top tier team in the Peach Belt Conference. It was an entertaining game, and a game that will make us better down the road. I am encouraged with what I saw from our team today."
The Braves will wrap up their stay in Savannah on Saturday when they battle Adelphi (0-1-0) in game three of the Armstrong Pirate Shootout. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
