SAVANNAH, Ga. – Kelsey Malles grabbed her first career hat trick with three goals in the opening frame to propel Adelphi to a 6-2 win over the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Armstrong Pirate Shootout.
The setback left the Braves (0-2-0) winless through the first two games of a season-opening three-game road trip, while Adelphi (1-1-0) evens up its record after a tough 1-0 loss to host-Armstrong State on Friday. Freshman Jillian Robson and junior college transfer Armani Boswell both scored goals for the Black & Gold.
"I signed us up for this tournament because I believe that, in order to be the best, you have to play the best. I stand by that statement," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "Today, we didn't show up to play and that's on me as the coach of this team. It is my responsibility to get my players ready. I can't remember the last time that we were this unprepared and came out this flat to start a game. We got back into the game at one point, only to give up another goal before halftime."
Adelphi scored three times in a span of 1 minute, 42 seconds midway through the first half to take a 3-0 lead, but the Braves answered with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart later in the period to get back into the game. Mailes completed her hat trick in the 43rd minute to give the Panthers a 4-2 advantage heading into the break.
UNCP will return to action on Tuesday evening when it heads to Charlotte to battle Queens in a 6 p.m. contest at the Queens Sports Complex.
