Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Perimeter Shooting Leads Georgia Southwestern Past Men's Basketball

PEMBROKE – Georgia Southwestern shot nearly 50 percent from the field and matched a season-high with 13 3-pointers to help the Hurricanes snap a three-game home win streak for the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team with an 81-70 victory over the Braves on Saturday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The setback marked the second-straight loss for UNCP (10-9, 4-6 PBC) who fell to 7-8 all-time in the series with the Hurricanes. The triumph stopped a two-game series losing streak for Georgia Southwestern (8-9, 4-6) who prevailed for just the third time in the last eight meetings with the Braves.

Brandon Watts tallied a game-high 27 points to go along with nine rebounds and a trio of steals for the hosts, who also got 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from Brandon Winford. Freshman James Murray-Boyles came off the bench to add 12 points for the hosts as well.

Adam Thoseby scored 19 points to lead Georgia Southwestern who finished the outing with a 13-for-23 clip (56.5 percent) from the perimeter. Damien Leonard tallied 17 points and Jure Gunjina turned in 16 points for the Hurricanes as well.

Georgia Southwestern had stretched a four-point halftime lead out to 46-35 just more than four minutes into the second half, but the Braves whittled away at their deficit and made it a two-possession game, 55-50, after a layup by Winford with 9:27 remaining. The Hurricanes would answer the rally, however, by scoring points on their next three possessions to pad its lead back out to 13 points, 64-51, with 7:52 to play.

Winford's jumper with 15:46 left in the first half gave UNCP a 9-5 advantage, but Georgia Southwestern scored eight-straight points to claim a four-point lead just more than three minutes later. A 3-pointer by Watts gave the Braves a 16-15 edge at the 10:49 mark, but a tip-in by Terence Johnson with nine minutes left would give the Hurricanes the lead for good.

The Braves will close out a short two-game homestand on Wednesday when they lace up to take on Augusta (10-7, 6-4) in the back end of a 7:30 p.m. doubleheader at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
