PEMBROKE – In what seemed like fate Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Lumbee River EMC Stadium, the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team and 12th-ranked North Georgia locked horns for 110 minutes in a critical Peach Belt Conference (PBC) matchup without deciding a winner, playing to a 3-3 tie in after double overtime.
Both sides attempted 27 shots and neither team led by more than one, as the Braves (9-2-1, 7-0-1 PBC) remain unbeaten in league play and clinched a spot in the upcoming conference tournament. The Nighthawks (10-1-3, 7-1-2 PBC) stretch their unbeaten streak to six contests and have also guaranteed themselves a spot in the PBC Tournament.
"This was another classis UNC Pembroke-North Georgia battle," head coach
Lars Andersson said. "This came couldn't have been any more even on the stat sheet, on the scoreboard and on the pitch. I think it was a well-deserved 3-3 draw and both teams can walk away feeling like they gave all they had."
The game opened with 33 minutes of scoreless action before the visitors were called for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick for the Black & Gold. Sophomore
Mackenzie Wright missed the penalty kick, but took the immediate rebound and found the back of the net to give UNCP a 1-0 advantage, her third goal of the season.
Just 14 seconds later, North Georgia knotted the game at one, when Rachel VanHorn scored her PBC-leading 15th goal of the season. The squads took a 1-1 tie into the halftime break after each firing 10 shots in the first 45 minutes.
The Braves grabbed the first of the second half in the 49th-minute off a set piece. Wright sent a free kick into the box to a waiting
Stacey Scott, who blasted the ball into the lower-right portion of the net. It's Scott's fourth goal of the season, tied for the team lead. The Nighthawks tallied the next two goals in the 61st- and 69th-minutes to snag their first lead of the day at 3-2.
Desperate for an equalizer with under 10 minutes on the clock, UNCP junior
Kate Weisner sent a cross into the box to the head of redshirt-junior
Courtney Crump, who put a ball off the crossbar that bounced straight down just inches over the goal line to produce the game's third tie. It's Crump's second goal of the season and Weisner's third assist.
Both teams had their opportunities in the extra periods, racking up a combined nine shots in the 20 minutes, but neither could find the elusive golden goal. The Braves accounted for four shots-on-goal in overtime, while North Georgia put two on goal after regulation.
"I'm incredibly proud that we were able to come from behind and draw level late in the game," Andersson said. "Although we did have our chances to win the game in overtime, it's fair to say that a tie is an appropriate result for this game."
UNCP freshman keeper
Gina Ryan surrendered multiple goals for the first time this season, but racked up a season-high nine saves while facing 27 shots. Her .915 save percentage and 0.46 goals against average are still tops in the PBC.
Wright paced the Braves with eight shots and Crump fired six of her own, each with three on goal. Nine different players attempted at least one shot for the Black & Gold.
North Georgia head coach Chris Adams was unable to make the trip due to medical reasons.
"I want to send my get-well wishes to North Georgia coach Chris Adams who had emergency surgery," Andersson said. "He is a good friend of mine and I'm glad to hear he is at home and recovering well."
Andersson was impressed with what he saw from the Nighthawks.
"I want to tip my cap to North Georgia," he said. "They are a very talented, hardworking and organized team."
Another huge matchup awaits the Braves Monday when Armstrong State makes the trip to Pembroke. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. The Pirates (11-1-1, 8-0-1 PBC) are winners of six straight and sit second in the league standings. The Braves are 0-12-2 all-time against the squad from Savannah, Georgia. The Pirates received votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
"It's time to lick our wounds, regenerate and get ready for a very tough match Monday," Andersson said. "We are looking forward to the challenge and hope our fans come out to support us."
