HICKORY – Catawba shot better than 56 percent from the field and canned 30 of their 39 attempts from the free throw line to hand the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team a 98-91 setback on the final night of the PBC/SAC Challenge inside Lenoir-Rhyne's Shuford Gymnasium.
The setback snapped a three-game series win streak for the Braves (1-1) who will open the home portion of their 2016-17 schedule on Wednesday against region rival Wingate at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The victory was the second in as many nights for the Indians (2-0) who upended Francis Marion on Friday evening at the event.
Four players posted double-figure scoring nights for the Black & Gold, including sophomore
James Murray-Boyles who came off the bench to rack up a team-best 20 points on 8-of-12 field goal shooting.
Alex Bradley chipped in 16 points, including 3-of-7 perimeter shooting, while
Nigel Grant added 15 of his own.
Jerrin Morrison tallied a game-high 29 points for Catawba, while Jameel Taylor went 9-for-9 from the charity stripe on the way to a 21-point outing.
Catawba connected of five of its first eight field goal attempts in the second half, and used two free throws by Morrison with 13:55 left to take the lead for good. The Indians pushed their lead out to double digits, 72-62, on a 3-pointer by Taylor nearly seven minutes later, and led by as much as 13 points after two free throws from Troy Warren made it an 84-71 game.
The lead changed hands four times in the opening half of action, but a short jumper by Taylor with 8:40 left before the break sparked Catawba on an 8-2 run that put some distance between the two squads. The Indians went scoreless over the final two minutes of the opening stanza, but still managed to drag a 42-40 lead into the locker rooms.
Tipoff for Wednesday evening's contest against Wingate at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court is scheduled for 7 p.m.
