Women’s Basketball Welcomes Wingate In Home Opener

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball squad lifts the lid on the 2016 home slate Sunday, hosting Wingate in a 1:30 p.m. affair at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.  
 
Fans can get free admission to the contest by donating three canned food or non-perishable items as part of the UNCP athletics department's annual canned food drive.
 
Fans can follow the game for free via a live video stream on the UNCP Braves YouTube channel with Cameron Songer handling the play-by-play duties. The game can also be followed via a live statistics link.

  • The Braves bring an unblemished 2-0 record into Sunday's game, having knocked off Coker and Fayetteville State on the road to begin the season. UNCP defeated Coker 78-75 before handling the Broncos 71-64.
  • Senior Jonissa Monley leads the Braves in scoring at 12.5 points per game, also averaging 8.5 rebounds per contest. Guards Jasmine Huntley and Ebone Stevens each pour in 12 points per game, while Blair Silliman (11.0) gives the Black & Gold four double-digit scorers early in the season. Huntley dishes out a team-best six assists per contest.
  • UNCP is shooting at a 42-percent clip through two games, including a 42.9-percent mark from behind the arc. The Braves are averaging 14.5 assists per tilt and knock down 70.2 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe.
  • Wingate will bring a 3-1 record to Pembroke Sunday, having won two-straight South Atlantic Conference (SAC) games. The Bulldogs opened the season against Peach Belt Conference competition, knocking off Armstrong State 76-74 before falling 73-72 to Clayton State. Wingate took down Tusculum 73-48 in the SAC opener and beat Lenoir-Rhyne 58-42 Tuesday.
  • Marta Miscenko paces the Bulldogs with 19 points per game and averages a double-double with 11.3 rebounds. Caroline Averette is the only other Wingate player averaging double-figures, pouring in 11.5 points per contest. The Bulldogs shoot 42.6 percent from the field and hit 40.6 percent from long range. Through four games, Wingate is outrebounding opponents by an average of 11.7 boards per game.
  • The Bulldogs lead the all-time series with UNCP 27-18, dating back to the first meeting in 1979-80. Wingate, the defending SAC champion, has won three straight over the Braves, including a 79-61 affair last season.
