Women’s Basketball Handles The Apprentice School

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Seniors Jonissa Monley and LaShonda Prichard each racked up a double-double to power the UNC Pembroke women's basketball squad past The Apprentice School 76-67 Saturday evening at the Apprentice Athletic Facility.

The 4-1 start is the best for the Braves since a 5-0 mark to begin the 2005-06 campaign. The Builders (2-5) drop to 1-4 at home this season and have yet to beat UNCP in three all-time meetings.

Four players poured in double-digit points for the Braves, who used a 9-0 run early in the third quarter to stretch their advantage to 11 at 41-30. Airico Williams and Avery Locklear each buried one from long range before Jasmine Huntley grabbed a defensive rebound and dribbled the length of the court for an easy lay in. The hosts pulled to within four at 57-53 with under seven minutes to play in the game, but the Black & Gold scored the next seven to take final control.

Monley canned a team-high 14 points, complemented with 13 rebounds for her 12th-career double-double and first of the season. Prichard tacked on 13 points and grabbed 13 boards, her first-career double-double. Williams came just one rebound shy of the Braves' third double-double, scoring 13 points and hauling in nine rebounds. Huntley added 12 points and seven boards.

UNCP outrebounded the Builders 54-32, including a 22-10 advantage on the offensive boards. The Braves scored 30 points in the paint and led for over 30 minutes. The teams combined for 57 fouls, including 16 in the fourth quarter alone. The Black & Gold went 25-for-38 from the charity stripe, while The Apprentice School connected on 20-of-29 of their free throws.

The sides each put up 15 points in the opening period and the Braves used a 17-13 advantage in the second quarter to take a 32-28 lead into the halftime break.

The Braves will enjoy a 10-day hiatus for final exams before returning to action Wednesday, December 14 at Mount Olive. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena. UNCP holds a 24-3 series lead over the Trojans, dating back to the first meeting in 1985-86. The Braves have won three-straight, including a 63-55 win last season in Pembroke.
