PEMBROKE – Visiting Montevallo pounded out 13 hits and scored 11 times behind senior Aron McRee's first career complete game and the Falcons evened up their weekend series with the UNC Pembroke baseball team with an 11-2 win over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
It was the first loss of the season for UNCP (7-1, 1-1 PBC) who will battle the Falcons for the series win on Sunday afternoon at noon in Pembroke. The Falcons (6-4, 1-1), who brought the league's best hitting offense into the weekend, have now won six of their last seven outings.
Stibel Aleman Saba singled three times and scored once on four trips to the plate to highlight the offense for the Black & Gold, who also got a 2-for-4, 1-RBI showing from leadoff hitter Nick Debo. Two other players registered a lone knock for the hosts, including Nick Salisbury who tripled in a run in the fourth.
Collin Dupree doubled and drove in three runs on a 3-for-5 hitting line for the Falcons. Thomas Bradey (1-for-1, 2 R) and Daniel Pardo (1-for-4) both hit home runs for the visitors.
Lane Johnson (0-1) surrendered five earned runs on three hits and a quintet of walks on the way to taking the loss for UNCP. McRaee (2-0) threw 116 pitches in his complete game gem, and picked up the win after allowing just a pair of earned runs on seven hits. He also struck out 11.
The Falcons did most of their damage in the top of the third, scoring five times on three hits and as many walks to grab the early advantage. Salisbury picked up his first hit of the season on a two-out RBI triple in the fourth that plated Aleman Saba to help the Black & Gold cut into a 6-1 deficit, but Montevallo tacked up another run on Pardo's solo job in the sixth, and then put the game away with a four-run seventh inning.
