O'Neil Collects 500th Win As Baseball Rolls Catawba

PEMBROKENick Debo's 2-run homer in the bottom of the first inning gave the UNC Pembroke baseball team a lead it would not relinquish as head coach Paul O'Neil grabbed his 500th win as skipper of the Braves with a 9-3 victory over visiting Catawba on Wednesday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Debo (2-for-4, 2 R) and Nick Salisbury (1-for-4) both hit home runs for the Braves (15-8) who improved to 13-10 against their in-state rival with the result. Nolan Pierce hit a pair of doubles and scored twice on a 2-for-4 hitting line, while Roberto Rivera (3-for-5, 2 R) turned in a trio of hits. Hayden Buffkin (2-for-4) registered a multi-hit day at the plate as well.

It was the second-straight loss for the Indians (13-10) who came into Pembroke having won five of their last six outings. Jake Kimble singled and doubled on a 2-for-4 performance to pace the visitors.

Matt Fuhr (1-1) struck out two and allowed just one hit in picking up the win amidst a pre-determined rotation for the Black & Gold, with Justin Pegram and Kyle Ramsey both throwing two scoreless innings as well. Ryan Kahny (0-1) took the loss for the Indians after surrendering five earned runs on as many hits in just 1-2/3 innings from the hill.

Debo's two-run blast in the first preceded a four-run second inning by the Braves that was highlighted by a two-run homer from Salisbury, as well as RBI singles from both Stibel Aleman Saba and Buffkin. Justin Dattilo hit a run-scoring single with one out in the fourth to put the hosts up 7-0, and Rivera padded that lead out to eight runs with a two-out RBI single in the fifth.

Kyle Smith put Catawba on the board with a solo home run in the seventh inning, but UNCP answered that score with a RBI double by Pierce in the bottom of the frame. A two-run homer by Dylan Richardson in the top of the eighth would cap the scoring on the day.

The Braves will continue a six-game homestand this weekend when they step back into Peach Belt Conference play to host Georgia Southwestern (15-10, 2-10 PBC) in a weekend series at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open up the series with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, and close out the set with a 1 p.m. single game on Saturday.
