Wingate Knocks Off Baseball In Midweek Tilt

PEMBROKE – Visiting Wingate scored 11 runs on 15 hits in the first five innings to build up a sizeable advantage and then hit cruise control on the way to an 11-3 victory over the UNC Pembroke baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Five different players recorded base hits for the Braves (12-6) who put their leadoff runner aboard just twice over the course of the contest, including a leadoff homer from Nolan Pierce (1-for-4) in the ninth. Nick Debo drove in a pair of runs on a 1-for-3 outing as well.

The Bulldogs (14-7) got multi-hit outings from seven different players, including all-American Shane Billings who singled twice and tripled once on six trips to the plate. Colby Barnette doubled twice and plated a pair of runs on a 2-for-6 performance. Bill Krebs (2-for-4) homered twice for Wingate as well.

The triumph snapped an 11-game road losing streak in the series for the Bulldogs who had not tasted victory at Sammy Cox Field since Feb. 26, 2003.

Starter Justin Pegram (0-1) surrendered two earned runs on three hits in his only inning of work to saddle the loss for the Black & Gold. Hunter Morgan (1-1) struck out four in five innings from the hill, and allowed just three hits and two unearned runs in his first start of the season to grab the win for the visitors.

Wingate scored two or more runs in each of the first four innings, and went out in front 11-0 on a solo job by Krebs with two outs in the top of the fifth. UNCP cut into its deficit on Debo's two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the frame, but the Braves mustered just two walks in their next 12 at-bats. Pierce broke the silence in the ninth when he clubbed a 3-and-1 offering from Wingate reliever Tyler Brown well over the wall in left field.

The Braves will close out a five-game homestand on Wednesday when they take on region nemesis Coker (15-5) at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
