Scott Nets Equalizer In 89th-Minute, Soccer Draws No. 5 Flagler

PEMBROKE Stacey Scott's equalizer with 73 seconds to play handed the junior her second brace in the last four outings to power the UNC Pembroke soccer team to a 2-2 draw with No. 5 Flagler in rainy, Peach Belt Conference (PBC) action Wednesday afternoon at Lumbee River EMC Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF
-Just 1:44 into the match, Flagler's first shot found the back of the net when Fio Fustagno headed home a cross from Concepcion Sanchez to give the guests an early 1-0 edge.
-The Braves bounced back with a corner kick and a pair of shots in a 21-second span early in the 4th-minute, but neither forced Flagler keeper Sarah-Lisa Dubel to make a save.
-Midway through the 13th-minute, UNCP was awarded its second corner of the match and took full advantage, as Scott leaped and headed in her fourth of the season off the entry ball from Kristina Stevenson.
-Gina Ryan made her first save in the Black & Gold net in the 29th-minute on a shot from Katie Reed and again two minutes later on a ball from Charlene Nowotny.
-The Saints headed a ball off the post in the 44th-minute and the rebounds fell to the foot of Fustagno, but her second attempt went wide left to send the match to the break knotted at 1-1.

SECOND HALF
-Neither side found the back of the net on five shots apiece in the first 18:16 of the second half.
-Ryan made her best save of the match in the 64th-minute when she was forced to dive to her left to knock away a Reed shot and keep the match level.
-The Saints were awarded a free kick from 35 yards out in the 78th-minute and a loose ball in the box was knocked in by Abby Austin to give the guests a 2-1 lead. Ryan
-Down one and on the ropes, the Braves found life in the 89th-minute when Katy Ryan found Carly Rochelle in the corner, who lofted a cross to Scott on the back side of the box. Scott let the ball fall to her right foot and beat Dubel high for her second goal of the match.
-The Braves had one chance to win the match in regulation with a corner kick in the final 10 seconds, but Stevenson's cross was cleared away by the Saints.

FIRST OVERTIME
-Each side had one shot, neither on goal, in the first 10-minute overtime period.
-UNCP's Shannon O'Neill and Flagler's Reed each sent a shot wide right in the golden-goal format.

SECOND OVERTIME
-The Saints had the first chances in the final period, but a Kaela Harmon headed went high in the 105th-minute and Austin's shot sailed wide left one minute later.
-Looking for the game-winner and a hat trick, Scott got her head on a Stevenson corner in the 107th-minute, but the shot was blocked away by a Flagler defender.
-UNCP's last-ditch effort came up short with six seconds to play when another Stevenson corner was cleared away by the Saints.

NOTABLES
-Scott's brace is her second of the season and third of her career. She netted a pair of goals last season in the PBC quarterfinals against Clayton State and earlier this year against Georgia Southwestern.
-Scott now leads with Braves with five goals and 13 points this season.
-Stevenson and Rochelle each picked up their third assist of the year, while Katy Ryan notched the first point of her career.
-Gina Ryan made seven saves in goal, her second-highest mark of the season and has yet to allow more than two goals in a match this year. Her 0.68 GAA leads the PBC, as does her .865 save percentage.
-Scott paced the Braves with five shots (four on goal), while Stevenson registered three and O'Neill, Alexis Pittman and Kate Weisner each attempted a pair.
-Flagler outshot the Black & Gold by a 25-15 margin, but held just a slim 9-8 edge in shots on goal.
-The Braves sit third in the PBC standings, two points behind second-place Columbus State and just one point clear of fourth-place North Georgia.

UP NEXT
The Braves play their second match in the middle of a four-game home stand Saturday when Lenoir-Rhyne makes the trip to Pembroke. First touch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Lumbee River EMC Stadium. The Bears (8-3-1) are winners of three straight and are 1-0 against PBC competition this season, a 6-0 trouncing of USC Aiken on Sept. 2. UNCP leads the all-time series 7-4-1 over Lenior-Rhyne, including a 4-2 mark at home. The sides haven't met since a 3-2 Bears' victory in 2013.
