Stevenson Blasts Game Winner, Soccer Shuts Out Lander

PEMBROKE – Redshirt-sophomore Kristina Stevenson's 50th-minute goal from 25 yards out held up for the remainder of the match and the UNC Pembroke soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to eight with a 1-0 win against visiting Lander in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) action Wednesday evening in Pembroke.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF
-The night's first action came nine minutes in when Stacey Scott shot's was knocked away by Lander keeper Sarah Owen.
-The Braves' best opportunity of the first half was a Jasmine Senecal-Guzman header off a corner that the senior sent inches over the crossbar in the 31st-minute.
-UNCP netminder Gina Ryan was tested for the first time in the 32nd-minute, but made an easy save on a Sara Flores shot from the top of the 18-yard box.
-Gina Ryan turned away Victoria Lange in the 37th-minute and Flores again seven minutes later pick up her second and third saves of the night.
-Kate Weisner put a shot on net with 50 ticks on the clock to force Owen to make her second save of the half.

SECOND HALF
-At 49:04 of the second half, the Braves turned a free kick into a goal when Christine Rolfes' sent a ball in from midfield that was knocked down by Scott in perfect position for Stevenson to bury the game winner in the upper-right corner of the net.
-Lander's Brennen McCarthy was shown a yellow card in the 60th-minute after a hard foul on UNCP's Alexis Pittman.
-The Bearcats' only shot in the final 10 minutes of action came in the 81st-munite, but Chloe LeFranc's attempt was blocked away by a Black & Gold defender.

NOTABLES
-The Braves outshot the guests by an 11-9 margin, but each side put a trio of shots on net, while UNCP held a slim 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
-Stevenson's goal was her second of the season and moves her into fourth on the team with seven points this season (2 G, 3 A).
-Scott picked up her team-leading fifth assist on the goal, while Rolfes put a point in the box score for the first time this season.
-Gina Ryan notched her PBC-leading seventh shutout of the season by going a perfect 3-for-3 in saves. She also leads the league in goals against average (0.52) and save percentage (.894).
-Fourteen different Braves have recorded at least one point this season, which is the most since the 2014 squad did the same.
-The Black & Gold sits fourth in the PBC standings, just one point behind third-place and No. 9 Flagler and two points behind second-place North Georgia.

UP NEXT
The Braves hit the road for the first time since Oct. 4 for a Saturday matchup with North Georgia. First touch is set for 3 p.m. at the UNG Soccer Complex in Dahlonega. The Nighthawks (9-3-2, 6-2-0 PBC) are winners of four-straight, including a 10-0 drubbing of Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday. UNCP holds a 6-4-3 lead in the series over North Georgia, but has not picked up a win since a 2012 victory in Pembroke.
