WILSON – For just the fourth time this season, the UNC Pembroke volleyball squad played a do-or-die fifth set, but came up just six points short in non-conference, midweek action against Barton Tuesday night in Wilson despite a double-double from sophomore outside hitter

FIRST SET
-The Braves led by two at 9-7, but Barton rattled off 12 of the next 14 points to take a commanding 19-11 lead and closed out a 25-18 first-set victory.
SECOND SET
-Two-straight UNCP points pulled the guests to within one at 14-13 before the Bulldogs used a 6-0 run to pull away and win the second set, 25-19.
THIRD SET
-The Black & Gold bounced back in the third set and jumped out to a 12-7 lead, but Barton answered with an 8-0 run of its own to take its first lead of the set at 15-12.
-Down 19-16, the Braves closed with nine of the final 13 points, capped off by an Ashwell kill, to win the set 25-23.
FOURTH SET
-The Braves took a 5-4 lead on a Barton attack error and did not trail again in the fourth set to pull even at two sets apiece.
-Barton knotted the match at 19-19 with a 4-0 run, but UNCP claimed six of the final nine points and won the set on an April Tankersley kill.
FIFTH SET
-Seven of the first nine points in the first-to-15 set went to the Bulldogs to give the hosts a quick 7-2 lead.
-The Black & Gold was down 12-5 and used a 4-2 run to get back within five, but a Miranda Miller kill put a cap on the five-set, Barton victory.
NOTABLES
-The Braves fall to 2-2 in five-set matches this season.
-UNCP's .127 hitting percentage was its highest in the last four outings, highlighted by a .304 clip in the third set.
-Tuesday marked the sixth time this season that the Braves had double-digit blocks (12) and five of the six instances have come in October.
-Ashwell's double-double (11 kills, 16 digs) was her third of the season and her dig total was her second-highest of the campaign. Ashwell added one solo block and a pair of block assists.
-
Makaylah Elliott tacked on nine kills, one solo block, four block assists and one dig, while Tankersley logged four block assists.

Bailee Jones handed out a team-high 21 assists, her seventh 20-plus output of the season, and
Cayce Bell led all Braves with 17 digs.

The Braves open a three-match, weekend home stand when they welcome Peach Belt Conference foe Francis Marion to Pembroke on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The Patriots (7-16, 2-8 PBC) have lost five-straight matches and seven of their last eight overall, but knocked off the Braves in straight sets on Oct. 3 in Florence.
