PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team put up a season-high 15 runs for the second-straight game and got at least one hit from 10 different players on the way to a series-clinching 15-4 win over Concord on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
Freshman
River Ryan doubled twice and drove in two runs on a 3-for-4 outing to pace the Braves (5-1), while
Nolan Pierce (3-for-6) plated a pair of runs and tacked up three hits.
Roberto Rivera drove in a career-best five runs on a 2-for-5 showing, while
Hayden Buffkin homered for the second-straight day to earmark a 2-for-5 hitting line as well.
Paul Williams walked and singled three times on four trips to the plate to lead the Mountain Lions (0-2), while Chad Frazier (1-for-3) homered for the second time in 24 hours. Jordan Clark singled and doubled on a 2-for-5 day at the plate.
Matt Fuhr (1-0) struck out six and scattered six hits and three runs (one earned) over a career-long six innings from the hill to grab the win for the Braves, while newcomer
Cole Lovin notched his second save in as many appearances with three strikeouts in three innings of work.
Indiana Hall (0-1) yielded 10 runs (seven earned) on six hits and a pair of walks in just 2-1/3 innings from the mound to saddle the loss for the visitors.
Concord grabbed a first-inning lead for the second-straight game on a solo homer by Frazier in the opening frame, but UNCP piled on the runs over the next four innings and led 11-1 after Buffkin's solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. The Mountain Lions cut into their deficit with a pair of scores in the sixth, but the Braves answered with three more scores in the seventh, including a two-run homer by
Ethan Baucom.
The Black & Gold will look for its first series sweep of the season on Sunday when it closes out its set with Concord at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
