PEMBROKE –
River Ryan hit a go-ahead RBI single with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, and then closed out the game on the mound with three-straight outs in the ninth as the UNC Pembroke baseball team completed a weekend sweep of visiting Concord with a thrilling 14-10 triumph in Sunday's series finale.
Â
It was the fifth-straight win for the Braves (6-1) who improved to 5-1 at Sammy Cox Field this season as well. The setback marked the sixth-straight series loss for the Mountain Lions (0-3) who committed 15 errors on the weekend, including eight in Sunday's contest.
Â
Roberto Rivera stole two bases and singled in a pair of insurance runs in the eighth to highlight a 4-for-6 day at the plate, while
Drew Beaver capped off a torrid weekend at the plate by doubling on a 3-for-5 afternoon.
Nick Debo (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Ryan (2-for-5, 2 RBI) both tacked up a pair of hits as well.
Â
Concord got 2-for-4 showings from both Adrian Peralta and Trevor Wiersma, while Jakob Divers plated a trio of runs on a 1-for-4 hitting line.
Â
Reliever
Kyle Ramsey picked up his first win in the Black & Gold with two innings of shutout relief, while Ryan struck out two in the ninth but did not pick up a decision. McKinley Scott (0-1), the last of three relievers on the day for the visitors, absorbed the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits in just 1-2/3 innings of work.
Â
Concord tacked up five runs in the top of the second and led 6-1 in the middle of the third, but UNCP erupted for six runs in the home half of the third and stretched its advantage out to 10-7 with three more scores in the fourth. The Mountain Lions went quietly in the next two frames, but plated three runs in the seventh to knot the score back up.
Â
The Braves got a single from Debo to lead off the bottom of the eighth, and moved the runner to third courtesy of a
Justin Dattilo sac bunt to set the table for a go-ahead RBI single from Ryan two batters later. Rivera followed with a two-run single up the middle, and then later scored on an error by Scott a short time later.
Â
UNCP will pack up its show and head to Columbia, S.C., on Wednesday to battle Benedict (2-0) in a 1 p.m. contest at Tiger Field.
