Burke, Baseball Cruise In Series Opener With Saint Rose

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team lit up the scoreboard with 22 runs on 18 hits to help support a masterful performance by right-hander Anthony Burke as the Braves cruised to a 22-0 win over 2016 Northeast 10 Tournament finalist Saint Rose in the series opener on Friday at Sammy Cox Field.

Redshirt freshman Seth Hartings singled, homered and doubled twice on a perfect 4-for-4, 5-RBI day at the plate to lead the Braves (7-1) who have now won six-straight outings. Justin Datillo hit his second home run of the season to highlight a 3-for-4 hitting line, while Nolan Pierce doubled and drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 performance.

The Golden Knights (0-1) got singles from Matt McKinnon (1-for-4) and Joe DeLuca (1-for-3), while Tom Moore walked on a 0-for-1 showing.

Burke (3-0) struck out 10 and allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings of work to notch his Peach Belt Conference-leading third victory of the season, while freshman Justin Brown struck out a trio of batters in two scoreless innings of work to help the Braves collect their second combined shutout of the campaign.

Joe Pokrentowski (0-1), an all-conference selection last season, saddled the loss for the visitors after yielding six earned runs on five hits and six walks in four innings from the hill. He also struck out four.

The Braves had already blistered Pokrentowski with five hits and six runs by the end of the fourth inning, but erupted for nine runs on seven hits in the fifth to bust the game wide open. UNCP scored runs in seven of their eight at-bats in the ballgame, including 3-spots in the third, seventh and eighth frames.

Burke faced four or less batters in five different frames, and recorded 1-2-3 innings in the first, fifth and sixth innings. He also retired eight-straight batters at one point in the middle innings.

UNCP will close out its series with the Golden Knights with an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field.
