PEMBROKE – The 23
rd-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team fell in its Sunday opener with Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) foe Emmanuel, 27-21, but used 20 takedowns and four near falls to top Ferrum, 28-13, on Sunday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
The dual meets marked the first home action for the Braves (4-6, 1-2 ECAC) since hosting the 36
th Annual Pembroke Classic on Nov. 5, 2016.
Ferrum (12-6) cut into a 9-0 deficit through two matches with a pin from Austin Smith at 141 pounds, but the Braves responded with wins in five of the next six bouts to take a commanding 28-10 advantage on the team scoreboard.
Jayquon McEntyre (125 pounds) and
Makenna Cook (197) both registered pins in the victory.
In the early contest, Emmanuel (11-1, 3-1 ECAC) tacked up pins in four of the first six individual matchups to go out in front 24-6, but had to withstand a late surge by the Braves in order to secure the victory. All-American
Blaze Shade tallied a second-period pin at 174 pounds to help UNCP cut into its deficit, but the Lions got a key win at 184 pounds to all but secure the team victory.
UNCP will open up another road trip on Monday when it heads to Hartsville, S.C., for an ECAC matchup with Coker (3-7, 0-4) inside the Harris E. & Louise H. DeLoach Center. Wrestling action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
