MISENHEIMER –
Drew Beaver's sac fly with one out in the sixth inning gave the UNC Pembroke baseball team a lead it would not relinquish as the Braves captured their road opener with a 4-0 shutout of Pfeiffer on Tuesday at Joe Ferebee Field.
It was the 10
th-straight series victory for the Braves (3-1) whose last loss to the Falcons (0-2) came during the 2008 campaign.
Beaver (2-for-3, RBI) and
Nolan Pierce (2-for-4, R) each registered a pair of hits to pace the Black & Gold, while newcomers
Jarratt Mobley (1-for-4, R) and
River Ryan (1-for-3, BB) both collected RBI as well. Damon Smith tallied a 2-for-3 hitting line to pace the hosts.
Kyle Boraski made his second start in four days for the Braves and hurled three shutout innings before giving way to reliever
Hank Simpson in the fourth. Simpson (1-0) struck out one and surrendered just a lone hit in four solid innings to get the win for the visitors. Jordan Toney (0-2) took the tough-luck loss for Pfeiffer despite allowing just four hits and one run in six innings of work.
Beaver's sac fly broke the scoreless deadlock in the sixth, but the Black & Gold added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on consecutive two-out hits by Mobley and Ryan.
Hayden Buffkin plated Beaver from third base with a RBI groundout in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Simpson retired the first 11 batters he faced before surrendering a two-out single in the seventh.
The Braves will return home against this weekend to host a three-game non-conference series with Concord (0-0) at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open the weekend with a 3 p.m. contest on Friday.
