AUGUSTA, Ga. – Home-standing Augusta scored 10 runs on as many hits in the first three innings to take control early, and then held off a pair of late rallies by the UNC Pembroke baseball team on the way to a series-clinching 11-5 victory over the Braves on Saturday at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Drew Beaver walked and singled twice on a 2-for-4 outing for the Braves (16-7, 2-4 PBC) who got run-scoring knocks from five other players as well.
Roberto Rivera matched a school record with his sixth triple of the season and scored a pair of runs to highlight a 1-for-4 hitting line.
Tyler Roberts (3-for-5) tacked up a trio of hits and scored three times to lead the Jaguars (9-11, 4-5) who got two hits apiece from three other players as well.
Kyle Boraski (0-2) yielded 10 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits in 2-2/3 innings from the hill to pick up the loss for the Black & Gold. Will Thompson (2-0) struck out three and scattered five hits and a pair of earned runs over five innings of work to grab the win for the hosts.
Hayden Buffkin's RBI groundout in the first helped UNCP light up the scoreboard first, but Augusta countered with four runs in the home half of the frame, and then strung together seven hits on the way to a six-run third inning. The Jaguars plated an insurance run in the sixth to pad its lead out to 11-2, but the Braves rallied for three scores in the seventh, including two on RBI hits by Buffkin and
Stibel Aleman Saba, to provide the final.
UNCP will open up an eight-game home stand next weekend when they welcome league rival Georgia College (14-6, 3-3) to Pembroke for a weekend series at Sammy Cox Field.
