Big Innings Lift Georgia College Past Baseball In Series Opener

BREAKING: Rain Forces Baseball Schedule Change; Saturday Game Postponed

PEMBROKE
– The UNC Pembroke baseball team scored eight times and registered its 13th double-digit hit attack of the season, but visiting Georgia College scored multiple runs in four different frames on the way to a 13-8 victory over the Braves in Friday's series opener at Sammy Cox Field.

Nick Debo hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season and drove in three runs to highlight a perfect 3-for-3 night at the plate for the Black & Gold (16-8, 2-5 PBC) who tallied 14 hits for the third time in the last five outings. Roberto Rivera doubled and singled twice on a 3-for-5 showing, while Stibel Aleman Saba clubbed his second home run of the campaign to support a 2-for-4 hitting line.

Six different players turned in multi-hit nights at the plate for the Bobcats (15-6, 4-3), including Logan Mattix (2-for-4) and Nate Schmal (2-for-5) who tallied four RBI apiece in the victory.

Right-hander Anthony Burke (4-1) was handed his first loss of the campaign after surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and a trio of walks in five innings of work. Brady Walsh (3-0) spelled reigning Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week Charlie Hecht with two down in the fourth and allowed just two runs and four hits over the final 5-1/3 innings to grab the win in relief.

Georgia College took control early with five runs in the top of the first, but the Braves battled back and used a three-run third inning to take a 6-5 lead into the fifth. The Bobcats, however, would light up the scoreboard for three runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Barring inclement weather that is expected to move into southeastern North Carolina on Friday evening, the two squads will resume their series on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
