Box Scores (Game 1 | Game 2)
PEMBROKE – Visiting Coker scored all 18 of its runs in just four innings and held the UNC Pembroke softball squad to just seven hits in a 8-0, 10-0 sweep of the Black & Gold Thursday afternoon at LRA Field in non-conference action.
The results push the Braves' (17-14) current losing streak to ten, which is the longest skid since 13 consecutive defeats in the latter half of the 2012 season. Coker (23-7) snapped a mini two-game skid with the victories and picked up their seventh run-rule triumph of the season in game two.
Coker wasted no time scoring in the opener, as the Cobras struck for three runs in their first at-bat. They tacked on five more in the seventh to put the game out of reach. UNCP got one hit apiece from
Abbey Walters,
Toni Nelson and
Rendi Wetherington, all three singles. Three other Braves reached via walk to account for six runners left on base.
Freshman
Malerie Leviner (5-8) hurled her ninth complete game and allowed six earned runs. She struck out two Cobras on 103 pitches.
After two scoreless frames to open the second game, Coker rallied for four runs on four hits in the third to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Another six runs in the fourth put the Cobras in mercy-rule territory and the Braves were unable to scratch across any runs to prolong the game. Three Brave errors in the field led to four of the 10 runs being unearned.
Freshman
Maddie Armfield (1-2) made her second collegiate start in the circle and allowed six earned runs while striking out three in 3.1 innings of work. Leviner took over in relief in the fourth and tossed the final 1.2 innings in perfect fashion.
Wetherington went 2-for-3 at the dish in game two, while Walters and
Jessica Auld each tacked on a single. Wetherington and Auld each stole a pair of bases.
The Braves are scheduled to take on No. 3 North Georgia Saturday in a Peach Belt Conference twinbill at LRA Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., but with rain in the forecast, stay tuned to uncpsoftball.com for any changes. The Nighthawks (23-7, 3-2 PBC) split a doubleheader with Flagler Thursday.
