Baseball Topples Top-Ranked North Georgia In Series Opener

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team hit three home runs for the second time in 72 hours and right-hander Anthony Burke pitched into the ninth to help the Braves upend top-ranked and Peach Belt Conference-leading North Georgia, 10-6, in Friday's series opener at Sammy Cox Field.

It was the third-straight win for the Black & Gold (19-9, 4-6 PBC) who registered its second win over a No. 1-ranked team since the start of the 2013 campaign. The setback snapped an 11-game win streak for the Nighthawks (21-5, 8-2) who assumed the top spot in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 25 on Monday.

The last win over a top-ranked team for the Braves came on the shoulders of a 14-3 rout of USC Aiken in the 2013 PBC Tournament.

Jarratt Mobley recorded a pair of 3-run homers and drove in seven runs to highlight a perfect 4-for-4 night for the freshman, while Stibel Aleman Saba hit a solo homer and scored twice on a 2-for-5 night at the plate. Ethan Baucom drew a pair of walks and scored three times and scored thrice to pace the hosts as well.

Mobley's performance marked the most RBI for a UNCP player since Dalton Knight drove in seven in a 13-1 win over Georgia Southwestern on March 15, 2014.

Pinch hitter Joshua Peterson hit a 3-run home run in the ninth to lead the Nighthawks.

Burke (5-1) matched a season-best with 10 strikeouts and yielded five earned runs on six hits in eight innings of work to grab the win for UNCP. Southpaw Steven Bower (5-2) surrendered four earned runs on as many hits and a trio of walks in five innings from the hill to take the loss for the visitors. Bower had registered wins in his previous four starts heading into the weekend.

North Georgia used a sacrifice fly from Trevor Sams to grab a 1-0 lead in the first, but Mobley put the Braves ahead for good on the first of his two home runs with two gone in the fourth. The Nighthawks pulled to within a run on a RBI double in the fifth, but UNCP padded its lead out to 8-1 in the sixth on a solo job by Aleman Saba, as well as another 3-run blast from Mobley.

A wild pitch and a RBI single from Mobley gave the Braves a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, and UNCP held off a furious rally by the visitors in the ninth to secure the outcome.

The league rivals will resume their weekend series on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
