ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The UNC Pembroke baseball team pounded out 10 or more hits for the 12
th time in the last 15 games, and the Braves registered their season-longest ninth-straight victory by finishing off a weekend sweep of Flagler with a 9-6 triumph on Saturday evening at Drysdale Field.
It is the 14
th win in the last 16 outings for the Braves (30-11, 13-8 PBC) who improved to 8-4 away from Pembroke with a twinbill sweep of the Saints on Saturday. Flagler (25-19, 12-9) fell for the fifth time in the last six matchups with the Black & Gold.
Saturday's nightcap triumph also marked the 12
th time in the last 13 years that UNCP has recorded at least 30 wins during the regular season.
Luke Jackson hit his second home run of the season to highlight a 3-for-5 night at the plate, and senior
Nick Debo homered for the third time in the last four games to fuel a 1-for-3 showing at the dish.
Drew Beaver (2-for-4) singled twice and scored three times, while
Roberto Rivera (1-for-5) hit a key bases-clearing double in the second as well.
Four players turned in multiple hits for the Saints, including leadoff hitter Ethan Crout who doubled in a run on a 3-for-5 performance. Bobby Bassler (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Jake Hathaway (2-for-5) both scored a pair of runs as well.
Kyle Ramsey (4-2) spelled UNCP starter
Jesse Stinnett with one gone in the fourth and did not allow an earned run in four innings of relief to pick up the win going away. He also struck out three.
Hank Simpson pitched 1-2/3 innings of scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts to notch his third save of the campaign.
Cooper Wallace (6-2) lost a decision for the first time since March 4 (No. 2 Tampa) after yielding eight earned runs on as many hits and four walks in just 2-2/3 innings from the hill. Wallace had won five-straight decisions heading into the weekend.
UNCP led 8-0 after Jackson's RBI single with two outs in the top of the third, but the Saints slowly chipped away at their deficit and eventually pulled to within a trio of runs, 9-6, on a RBI single by Bassler with two down in the fifth. Ramsey would sit down eight of the next 10 batters after that, however, before giving way to Simpson with one out in the eighth.
The Braves will close out a five-game road trip on Tuesday when they pack up their show and head to Wilson for a 3 p.m. contest against Barton (28-17).
