FLORENCE, S.C. – Bobby Bassler's go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning capped off a late rally for sixth-seeded Flagler as the Saints survived to see another day with a 4-3 upset win over the 24
th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team in the semifinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Friday.
Â
The Braves (39-14) and Saints (31-23) will meet again on Saturday in an "if necessary" elimination game at Francis Marion's Sparrow Stadium. Game times will be determined following the conclusion of Friday evening's contest between third-seeded Georgia College and top-seeded North Georgia.
Â
Friday's setback marked just the fifth loss in the last 28 outings for the Braves, who also had their three-game series win streak stopped as well. It was the second upset win of the tournament for the Saints who took down 13
th-ranked and second-seeded USC Aiken earlier on Friday.
Â
Stibel Aleman Saba (RBI) and
Luke Jackson both turned in 2-for-4 outings to pace the Black & Gold. Jake Hathaway walked and drove in a run on a 2-for-3 night at the plate for Flagler, while Bassler finished his night with both a sacrifice hit and a sac fly to complement a 1-for-2 hitting line.
Â
Aaron Biggerstaff (2-1) yielded two earned runs on three hits in two innings of relief to take the loss for the Braves. Ethan Jones (4-0) shone brightly in relief for the pitching-depleted Saints, picking up the win after surrendering just a lone single in 2-1/3 innings of work.
Â
Aleman Saba gave UNCP a quick 1-0 lead on a one-out single in the top of the second, but the Saints pushed across a pair of runs in the home half of the frame to regain the momentum. The Braves knotted the score up on
Alex Simpson's sac fly in the fourth, and then took the lead on
River Ryan's sac fly in the seventh.
Â
Cole Ondrejka doubled to lead off the eighth and later scored on Hathaway's RBI single with one out minutes later. Biggerstaff induced a fly out from the bat of Ja'Kobi Dasher to put a second out on the board, but Bassler knocked a 1-and-1 offering into right field in the next at-bat to finish off the damage.
