Volleyball Takes One Set, Falls 3-1 On The Road At Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball squad uncorked a four-set season-high 50 kills and 12 blocks, including a season-high nine kills from April Tankersley, but suffered a four-set setback to host Augusta Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET
-With the set knotted at five apiece, the Braves cashed in three-straight points, including a kill from Aquia Jones and a block assist from Tankersley and Madelyn Ashwell.
-However, the next three rallies went to Augusta to force the set back even and the Jags took their first lead since 4-3 at 11-10.
-UNCP was down just one at 17-16 after a Tyler Fitzpatrick kill, but Augusta tallied the next four points to take a commanding 21-16 lead and put the set away.

SECOND SET
-A back-and-forth set did not see either side lead by more than two until back-to-back Augusta attack errors gave the Black & Gold a 16-13 edge.
-The Braves stretched the advantage to four at 22-18 on a Tankersley kill, but five of the next six rallies went to Augusta to bring the match back even at 23-23.
-The sides traded points seven times until the Braves took advantage of their fourth match point to lock up the set 28-26.

THIRD SET
-Down 11-9, a block from Makaylah Elliott and Aquia Jones brought UNCP within one, but the Jags gathered the next five points to take a 16-10 lead.
-Up 19-13, the hosts put an exclamation mark on the set by rattling off the last six points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

FOURTH SET
-Three-straight UNCP points, capped off by a block from Fitzpatrick and Tankersley, tied the set at seven all.
-Down 15-11, the Braves went on another 3-0 run, including a pair of kills from Michelle Voyer, pulled the guests to within one.
-Five Augusta kills and a UNCP attack error in the next six rallies put the Jags up 21-14 and sealed the match by a 3-1 final.

NOTABLES
-Fitzpatrick led all Braves with an even 10 kills  and tacked on 13 digs for her first-career double-double.
-Tankersley, Aquia Jones, Elliott and Voyer added nine, eight, seven and six kills, respectively, while Voyer hit a match high .600 (0 errors, 10 attacks).
-The Braves' 12 total blocks bested their previous high by three, led by seven block assists rom Aquia Jones.
-Freshman setters Miranda Cada and Casey O'Quinn totaled 47 assists, while the latter dished out 19 in her first collegiate action.
-Cayce Bell paced the Braves with a season-high 32 digs.

UP NEXT
The Braves will play their fifth-consecutive road match Tuesday at PBC foe USC Aiken. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center. The Pacers (8-2, 0-0 PBC) are in the midst of an eight-match winning streak, in which they have dropped just three sets, after starting the season 0-2.
