Volleyball Bombards Hiwasee In Three Sets, Falls To Georgia College

PEMBROKE
– The UNC Pembroke volleyball team generated two if its top three hitting performances Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court, as the Braves dropped a tight-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) match to Georgia College before overwhelming Hiwassee in a three-set triumph.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET
-The Braves led by as many as eight at 15-7 in part to 10 kills and a pair of service aces through the match's first 22 rallies.
-Georgia College found its footing and rattled off 12 of the next 14 points to erase the UNCP advantage and give the guests a 19-17 lead.
-Kills from Madelyn Ashwell and Kiara Price brought the match even at 19-19, but six of the final nine points went to the Bobcats in their 25-22 opening-set victory.

SECOND SET
-After the first 22 points of the second set, it was the Braves ahead again, this time at 13-9 thanks to eight kills from the home squad.
-A 4-0 Georgia College run put the guests up 16-14, but UNCP rebounded with six of the next nine points to reclaim the lead at 20-19.
-Two Bobcat points followed by a pair of UNCP tallies had the Braves up 22-21 and three points from a set win, but Georgia College collected the next four points to claim set two, 25-22.

THIRD SET
-The Braves once again led by five points in the third set, collecting seven of the first nine rallies to build a 7-2 advantage.
-A trio of kills from Makayah Elliott had UNCP out fron 10-7 before an April Tankersley kill extended the lead to four at 13-9 for the second-consecutive set.
-However, the Bobcats came from behind once again, scoring 10 of the next 13 points to grab a 19-16 edge.
-UNCP battled back with a 4-1 run to pull even at 20-20, but Georgia College secured the match with a 5-1 run to end the third and final set.

NOTABLES
-The Braves led by at least four points in all three sets (15-7 in the first, 13-9 in the second and 7-2 in the third).
-UNCP totaled seven blocks to Georgia College's four and registered 62 digs to the Bobcat's 54.
-Ashwell paced the Braves with 11 kills and added four digs and a block assist, while Elliott tacked on nine kills, one solo block, four block assists, four digs and an assist.
-Price compiled a team-high .545 attack percentage with six kills on 11 attempts and no errors. 
-Freshman setter Casey O'Quinn dished out a season-high 21 assists and added six digs and a service ace.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET
-The Braves jumped out to a 6-0 lead that quickly turned into a 13-3 advantage after the first 16 rallies.
-Seven-straight UNCP points extedned the lead to 20-5 before a block by Tankersley and Ashwell wrapped up the first set at 25-8.

SECOND SET
-The Tigers kept the second set close until a 10-1 UNCP run stretched the lead from 12-8 to a commanding 22-9 Braves' advantage.
-After a single Hiwassee point, the Braves rattled off the final three points, including two block assists from Savannah Bean and Michelle Voyer to end the set. 

THIRD SET
-The Black & Gold got off to another quick start in the third stanza, building a 6-1 lead that was eventually stretched to 18-7 on a Miranda Cada service ace.
-Up 21-12, the Braves ended the set and match in dominating fashion with a trio of kills (Voyer, Amber Tyndall and Bean) and a service ace (Casey O'Quinn).

NOTABLES
-The Braves established a season-best .333 hitting percentage and 13 service aces.
-Hiwassee's 15 kills and -.067 hitting percentage were each a season-low allowed by UNCP and the Braves did not allow a block for the first time in 2017.
-Tankersley's match-high 11 kills were a season best for the freshman, as was her .786 hitting percentage.

UP NEXT
The Braves continue a four-match hiatus from PBC play with a Tuesday trip to Georgia for a match against Emmanuel. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at the Emmanuel Volleyball Arena. The Lions (5-6) had won four-straight matches before a 3-1 setback to Limestone on Friday.
