Quick Start Helps Newberry Move Past Football

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry scored touchdowns on three of their first four possessions and held the visiting UNC Pembroke football team to just 77 yards in the second half to fuel a 28-6 victory over the Braves on Saturday afternoon in Setzler Field.

It was the third-straight setback for the Braves (1-4) who have now dropped three-straight series matchups with the Wolves (3-2) as well. It was the third-straight victory for Newberry who opened up the season with road setbacks to The Citadel and Virginia Union.

Senior E.J. Williams caught four passes for a team-best 43 yards to pace the UNCP offense, which also got 127 passing yards from Dominick Samson who completed 12 of 23 passes with a pair of interceptions. Austin Barnes ran for 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 22 carries to shoulder a bulk of the offense for the hosts.

Christopher Ploch tallied a team-best seven tackles, as well as a pass break-up for Code Black, but nearly all of the defensive highlights for the Braves came from Tyler Hinton who turned in six tackles, including a trio of sacks. The Wolves finished the day with six sacks, including two from Keito Jordan.

UNCP turned the ball over on the game's opening play, and Barnes put the hosts up for good two plays later on a 1-yard scoring plunge just 43 seconds into the tilt. The Braves answered later in the period on Samson's 40-yard touchdown strike to JoJo Spann down the far sideline, but Newberry scored twice more before the half to lug a 21-6 advantage into the break.

The second half proved to be mostly quiet for both sides until midway through the fourth quarter when quarterback Greg Ruff capped off an 8-play, 86-yard scoring drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. The Wolves were held to just 20 offensive yards in the third quarter, but erupted for 141 in the final period.

The Braves will continue a three-game road trip on Saturday when they make the short trip up U.S. 74 to battle undefeated Wingate (4-0) at Irwin Belk Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN3.
